Thrift Stores, Goodwill
I find that it's very easy to donate items to the Goodwill or local thrift shop/secondhand store when I want to give things away. When I want to buy something or find a "treasure" I can always browse through the store and pay a minimal amount for clothes, books, toys and tools. How is Giftflow better/different?

Adjustable search radius
When browsing gifts and needs in my location I would like to be able to adjust the search radius to a include a larger or smaller area. For instance, I'd love to be able to see all the New Haven gifts when searching from Northampton, MA!
4 votesMatthew, this is definitely something we are working towards. The majority of what is required is finished, we just need to figure out a way to untangle all the different search parameters (distance, category, keyword).
Look for an update soon!

allow people to link to their wishes and offers kept in a platform of their choice
Let's say someone has an account on platform like: http://communitytools.info or http://justfortheloveofit.org or whatever else and already cultivates there list of wishes and offers. With intelligent use of current technologies (like Linked Data) such person could just link to those lists in systems like http://giftflow.org http://freecycle.org http://ilovefreegle.org http://letsallshare.com http://ecomodo.com and growing...
i would like to start inviting people from all those projects to have mercy for people using them and make them all inter-operable, most likely using this working group for collaborating on it: http://www.w3.org/community/community-io/
3 votesElf, Thank you for the suggestion. You bring up a serious issue with our system and others. Maintaining borders between communities of giving and sharing is not a good idea, however building the tools so that data can flow between them seamlessly is not easy either. For now, we have an RSS feed (http://www.giftflow.org/rss/?location=new%haven) but it needs improvement. I am definitely interested developing GiftFlow’s interoperability. I will check out LInkedData and the w3.org group. Any more resources you can point me to would be great. -Hans

export feature for lists of my needs and offers
I like when sites give people freedom to take their information with them. I would like to have possibility to export list of my needs and offers at any time...
3 votesI’ve put this on our plan. Thanks for the great suggestion!

Would it be possible to work with you to make a re skinned
version of existing software so we can help the public to solve
other social issues (Ideally using the http://www.TRAIDmark.org business
structure)? Maybe working with someone like
http://www.ONEworldHEALTH.org or http://www.earth.org which is closing so maybe this is something I could help you take on so everyone can share local knowledge? Also can http://www.WEBiversity.org share video's and create http://www.TRUSTlibrary.org with your team? http://www.WhymanDesign.com3 votesShort answer: Yes, in the future! Long answer: once the GiftFlow web app’s code base is at a place where we feel it is stable enough for distribution, we are considering licensing re-skinnable copies of the platform to 3rd parties.

email address of users should not be shown
The email address is visible to everyone, instead it shouldn't be shown or there should be a privacy setting.
3 votesHey guys,
You are totally right about this. The problem is that the users with their emails showing registered in the days before we had First name and last name registration fields (bad decision from awhile ago).
What I can do is go through the database and strip off the ‘@hostname.com’ from the emails.
The way the system is set up now, users enter their first and last names and we concate that into a screen_name. We are not displaying the email field anymore.
Thanks for pointing this out. We’ll take care of it ASAP

Links to other services supporting sharing and helping
I would really like to see strong solidarity between various services supporting sharing and helping, even if they offer alternative to each other. I have started adding some of them on http://moneyless-world.info and hope that everyone listed there will link to all the other peers sharing similar aims!

Edit quantity
I suggest we give people the ability to add the number or amount of a certain item that they have. This way when they give a gift to somebody, they can enter how much they've given away and still have the remaining available for people to request.

Search Multiple locations simultaneously.
This way, if there is no action in one area, there may be action close by. And, I may be able to gift to someone from another town without have to switch back and forth.
1 voteHi David,
Sorry for the delay in responding. We are planning to overhaul our location searching soon. We may not be able to have multiple locations at once, but we should be able to give users the power to increase the ‘radius’ of each search, so you can look in a larger geographic area. -
Sponsor the growth of a self-sufficient suburban 'farmstead'
This multifaceted and deeply integrated social enterprise is conceived as a small (1/2 acre) semi-urban farm project that would strive for total economic self-sufficiency with 18-months. Food production (including value-added products) is coupled with alternative energy generation and soil building (compost) strategies to achieve potential surpluses with 2 - 3 years. The project is already 3-years in the making and poised for success as long as the rental property where it is based can be secured with a small 'lease-option' payment.

fix review links.
Currently clicking 'read more' on a user's review of a gift received/given goes to user profile instead of the review.
1 voteThis is definitely something we can take care of soon. Thanks for the suggestions

work on usability of existing features before adding more new features
Dashboard view, gift view, needs view, and user view all suffer from usability issues. Mysterious and incoherent. Why can't I search other locations, for instance?
1 voteDamjan, Thanks for the input. We are definitely planning to improve the consistency of our existing features. If you could provide more specific descriptions of what is not working, we can tackle the problems more quickly. Thanks

login with OpenID
OpenID became widely adopted open standard for delegated authentication. Could you please enable it for giftflow? Most programming languages have available libraries for it, including PHP...
1 voteElf, this is definitely something we can do. It would also be a great task for someone new to the now open-souce project. I’ll add it to Issues on our Github

Translations to many languages - with Transifex?
How about taking advantage from community driven translation systems like https://www.transifex.net/ to make GiftFlow available for people not speaking english?
1 voteWe are definitely planning on asking for help to translate GiftFlow. We are waiting until launching the beta before beginning those efforts. Although we already have a german-speaking supporter who wants to help us start in germany.

Have A FAQ about successfully giving and receiving (no jokes)
It seems to me that setting expectation is very important for a site like this. So make sure people know to set proper expectations for the gift they will give or the gift that they want. For example if someone wants a computer help make sure they are very specific about what it is they need and when it needs to be done by. That way no one will be disappointed in the interaction.
1 voteHi Dave, This is a great idea. Many users are just starting to give to one another and having clear guidelines is a must. Thanks for the help!
